"Now, why shoud I need to install IE6.0 (Internet Explorer) to play the game?" you ask. It's because it's based on dynamic "asp"/"aspx", "asp" I think probaly cause of the age of the project, and simple resuming, only IE can handle this thing well the way the game was created, maybe I'm wrong and FF, Opera can also, but the code call for IE, and unless some good soul can contribute with this, We need IE.
I'll start with wine, who prefer the easyer way, jump WINE to bottom and see VM-Virtual Box:
WINE Setup
Its quite simple but demand several steps:
- Install wine from your repository, if you dont have it, get it on
http://www.winehq.org and choose your distribution;
- You have to delete or move the following files, otherwise Wine won't let IE6 installer to install necessary files:
"~/.wine/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe"
Its on your home dir (folder), press ctrl+h to show your hided dir, again, its "
.wine"
- del/move this also "mshtml.dll" "shdoclc.dll" "shdocvw.dll" "shlwapi.dll" "urlmon.dll" "wininet.dll" in "~/.wine/windows/system32" directory
- Run winecfg, go to Libraries tab and add overrides for the following applications and libraries:
"iexplore.exe"
"mshtml"
"shdoclc"
"shdocvw"
"shlwapi"
"urlmon"
"wininet"
"mlang"
setting them to (native, builtin). (if you new on wine, you will understand when you get there)
- Set Wine version to 2000 (windows 2000) in winecfg. (I'm using Vista set now and works great)
- Lower the version of installed IE by running "regedit" (regedit.exe) in "~/.wine/drive_c/windows" and then, search:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->Internet Explorer->chage from version 6.0 or whatever version its there to 5.0.
- Run IE6SETUP.EXE that you downloaded from Microsoft, It should complete without errors.
- At this point IE6 will run but it won't display any content. To solve this problem you should get msls31.dll in /windows/system32 of windows XP or /windows/system of windows 98 or download msls31.dll file (use google) and copy into ~/.wine/windows/system32 directory.
Important, dont try to run IE alone, only use this to SPO, if you want to run IE in linux there are another and proper way to do it, and you can ask, "why not use this "proper" way?" because dont work is the simple answer, and I cant help with it

And now! To the game, it can be installed already or after, dosent matter, now start it!
VM Setup
Search in your repository "VirtualBox" install it the version your distro brings you, if you dont find it, go to VM Sun site
http://www.sun.com/software/products/virtualbox/get.jsp and get the 1st option for personal use, its free, then install it, open it, and twik settings, to winXP or Vista its fast like it is running alone I dont recomend win98, its blood slow in VM, and Sun dont want to try make this crap work fast and properly anymore, but work.
The minimum memory settings I tryed and work fine is 192Mb for XP and 256Mb for Vista, worth open more mem to guest than I told here if you are comfortable with memory, lets say that above 1Gb of machine memory, you can give 256Mb/512Mb to XP/Vista or more, just left at least 256Mb for Linux host to manage all the things you should want to work.
Its not necessary ACPI option on in VB (Virtual Box), you wont use and this consume a little of resources, and if I remember comes "on" by default. The rest is straight forward, configure your CD to be the boot drive and install your windows by virtually turning VM plug on.
Good luck.
